Better than Alexa ? I hope so

April 29th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Alexa has been the most popular choice of free web ratings for many years. Its methodology is based on tracking the clicks of users that opt-in by installing a toolbar on their IE or Firefox browser. Ok, Firefox support is almost non existent. A growing number of people are dissatisfied with Alexa ranking system and data collection methodology. Today, I bumped into Compete, a site that claims to provide far superior results than Alexa [...]

Migrate your VMware image to Amazon EC2 (and back)

April 25th, 2007 · 2 Comments

This is poised to be a major breaktrough. Enomaly has released a Migration Module for its Enomalism Virtualized Management Dashboard that converts an exisitng VMware image to a format compatible with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud EC2, and vice versa. I have already virtualized my Windows laptop to run under Parallels on my MacBook. The next step will be virtualizing all my personal servers and migrating them to EC2 and S3. The Kansas City infoZine reports: NeoMedia Technologies, Inc., claims to own rights to all systems that provide information over computer networks using database-like lookup procedures that rely on scanned inputs, such as a barcode. NeoMedia has used these claims not only to threaten and sue innovators in the mobile information space, but also to intimidate [...]

Contact

April 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

I am currently evaluating various contact plugins. Secure and Accessible PHP Contact Form v.2.0WP sounds promising but I am running into some snags. While I am engaged in this stupendous  axe-sharpening[*] activity, send your emails to [first_initial][last_initial] a-t mydomainname.com. Sure it is not pretty but gotta fight spam! [*]Give a person six hours to cut down a tree, the saying [...]

ZX Spectrum turns 25

April 23rd, 2007 · 3 Comments

Monday 23 April marks the 25th anniversary of the ZX Spectrum! It was my first programmable computer. It had a 3.54Mhz Zilog Z80A microprocessor with only16Kbytes or RAM and only16Kbytes or ROM. Tha’s right, there was a time when the amount of ROM was part of the computer’s specs. After a few months, I ordered the chips for expanding the RAM to a mind-boggling 48Kbytes and I felt like I finally could get the Lisp environment to work at full speed. Yup, there was also [...]

Beyond Captcha

April 15th, 2007 · No Comments

This blog is based on WordPress and just like every blog it is attacked by spammers. So I went and shopped for anti-spam WordPress plugins and found that the most popular was Askimet. I was almost sure that Askimet was based on captcha, a technology that prompts a commenter to type a random sequence of [...]

A Great Quote for Innovators

April 8th, 2007 · No Comments

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man. ~ G. B. Shaw You might want to check out the movie about Ralph Nader “An Unreasonable Man“
