Live, Vast and Deep: Web-native Information Visualization

March 3rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

By far the most popular session this morning is Live, Vast and Deep: Web-native Information Visualization. Tom Carden from  Stamen Design and creator of amazing, data rich sites such as Oakland Crimespotting. Also mentioned during the talk were Every Block, a website for knowing everything about a city’s block. These guys are doing wonders with Flash, GPS, GIS and XML, pushing to the limit technologies like Invisible Ideas on which I worked several years ago. Eric also showed a vintage video featuring Microsoft Cinemania (circa 1998) to make the point that state of the art on the web today is still lagging behind what was cutting edge on the desktop 10 years ago . Stamen’s portfolio.

As much as I’d like to claim credit for the talk, it was actually Tom Carden, my brilliant colleague at Stamen who should get the props :)
